Abaya is a kind of attire characterized by a loose black robe that runs from the head to toe and is traditionally worn by Muslim women, particularly in the Islamic world. The cloak is mostly made of black fabric. It is also otherwise known as 'aba'.The dress covers the entire body of the woman leaving an exception of the hands, feet and the face.
It basically is an clothe made of two pieces including the head gear with niqab and the large piece of square shaped cloth that becomes the loose robe. Abaya is regarded as the national dress of the UAE and it is indeed mandatory for all the women across Turkey, Arabian Gulf and North Africa to be dressed in the same. It is known by the name kebaya when it comes to Indonesia and Malaysia.
The sole purpose of getting a woman dressed in Abaya is to ensure that her body and the associated beauty are kept concealed and thus away from the vision of men who are unknown to her both by blood and through marriage. It is hence a mandate for every woman to keep herself under the cover of abaya in public. This attire not only has a religious importance but is also known for its cultural as well as traditional importance.
A sense of protection is often felt by those women who wear the Abaya and this is marked by a line in the holy Quran that says, "They will thus be recognized and no harm will come to them." It is also possible to differentiate younger women from older women as well as the native and the outsiders in the UAE by means of the variation in the head gears. This way, the Abaya also adds a specific identity to women.
